The name of this gulf is also Gharapuri which means city of caves. There are two types of caves at this place, one which depicts the Hindu religion and the other which are for the followers of Buddhism. Both these caves remain closed on Monday due to construction work.
The island can be reached by ferry from the Gateway of India terminal in Colaba. The fare to go here is very cheap and this service is available to the person twice every hour. Tourists reach here in an interval of one hour via ferry. Boat rides and sights will add to your journey as a tourist.

The main temple or the Great Cave is the most popular of all the other caves and attracts the most tourists. If we talk about the two most popular idols, then the names of these are Elephanta Trimurti and Nataraja. Tourists must see the idol made in the dance posture of Lord Shiva.

Apart from the main idols, tourists visiting here can also see the idols of Lord Shiva in which he is sitting in different yoga postures. In view of conservation efforts, the island administration has now established the site as a museum.
