The Taj Mahal is the most famous monument of the Mughal rule. This white marble work is famous all over the world and is the main center of tourist attraction. Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders of the world. The Taj Mahal is a wonderful expression of a great ruler's love for his beloved queen. The most enchanting and beautiful view of the Taj Mahal is visible on the full moon night.

History

The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife Arjumand Bano Begum, also known as Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan over the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal. After his death, Shah Jahan was also buried there. This mausoleum was named Taj Mahal after Mumtaz Mahal. After marriage in 1612 AD, Arjumand remained an integral companion of Shah Jahan until he died in Burhanpur during delivery in 1631. The residence of Mumtaz Mahal, named after the late queen, was built after Mumtaz, now called Taj Ganj and was also built near it. The Taj Mahal is a masterpiece of Mughal architecture. A beautiful blend of Persian, Ottoman, Indian and Islamic architecture has been done in the construction of the Taj Mahal. In 1983, the Taj Mahal was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Taj Mahal has also been declared a gem of Islamic art of India. The white dome of the Taj Mahal and the central mausoleum covered with marble in tile shape is a unique example of architectural beauty.

Structure

The Taj Mahal is built on a rectangular plot of 580×305 meters and is aligned north-south. In the center of the plot of Taj Mahal is a square garden, the length of which is 305 meters on each side. The garden is surrounded by two small rectangular sections on the north and south. The southern rectangular section has an entrance made of sandstone for access to the premises and the attendants' building. The northern rectangular section reaches the banks of river Yamuna. Here are the most important buildings, such as the famous mausoleum, with two identical buildings on the western and eastern sides, the mosque and the jawab (pratutara or aesthetically balanced building). It is surrounded by a high boundary wall, at the corners of which are octagonal pavilions, in which kangaroos have come out. This boundary wall surrounds the northern section and the central part of the garden. To the south are the stables and the guards' chambers. The entire complex was planned and constructed in a holistic manner, as no later manipulations were customary in the Mughal building works.

Construction

The construction of the Taj Mahal started around 1632. A council of architects from India, Persia, Central Asia and other countries prepared a plan for the construction of this building. More than 20 thousand workers and artisans were engaged in the construction of the Taj Mahal every day till the completion of the work of Taj Mahal in about 1653. The wall and the main gate around the Taj Mahal were built in 1649. The construction of the entire Taj complex took 22 years and cost four crore rupees. Apart from India, there were also workers from Persia and Turkey. Taj has a different style of its own which attracts the audience towards it. Shah Jahan had the hands of those who built it cut off. The map of this monument was made by the Indian architect Isa. Some people speculate that the help of an architect from Italy or France was also taken in making taking the map.

Material

Materials of the Taj Mahal were brought from all over India and Central Asia. A fleet of 1000 elephants was taken to bring this material to the construction site. The central dome of the Taj Mahal is 187 feet high. Red sandstone of Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, Jasper in Punjab, Jade and crystal from China, Turquoise i.e. blue stone from Tibet, Lapis Lazuli and Sapphire from Sri Lanka, Coal and Cornelian and Diamonds from Panna from Arabia. In total, 28 types of rare, valuable and semi-precious stones were used in the carving of the Taj Mahal. The main building material, white marble, was brought from the mines of Makrana in Nagaur district, Rajasthan.

Entrance

The main entrance to the Taj Mahal is from the south gate. This entrance is 151 feet long and 117 feet wide and the height of this entrance is 100 feet. Tourists enter the main complex through small gates built next to the main entrance.

Main entrance

The main gate of the Taj Mahal is made of red sand stone. This main gate is 30 meters high. The verses of the Qur'an have been carved on this main gate in Arabic script. Above this main gate there is a small dome-shaped pavilion of Hindu style and looks very grand.

One of the main features of this gateway is that the letter writing appears to be of uniform size from here. It is so skillfully carved by the sculptors that the upper and lower letters create the illusion of being one size. There are well-manicured gardens of 300x300 meters in the form of four gardens, which are spread on both sides of the walkway. It has a platform in the middle from where tourists can take pictures of the Taj.

Taj Museum

To the left of the platform of the Taj Mahal is the Taj Museum. Here in the original drawings one can see the detail of how this monument was architecturally planned. The architect had also estimated that it would take 22 years to build this building. These meticulous interior drawings show the position of the tombs so that the foot side of the tombs can be visible to the onlookers from any angle.
